The Shock of History: Religion, Memory, Identity, by Dominique Venner

The shock of history: we live it, neither knowing or comprehending it. France, Europe, and the world have entered into a new era of thought, attitudes, and powers. This shock of history makes clear the fact that there is no such thing as an insurmountable destiny. The time will come for Europe to awaken, to respond to the challenges of immigration, toxic ideologies, the perils of globalism, and the confusion that assails her. But under what conditions? That is the question to which this book responds. Conceived in the form of a lively and dynamic interview with a historian who, after taking part in history himself, never ceased to study and reflect upon it. In this text, the first of his major works to appear in English, Dominique Venner recounts the great movements of European history, the origin of its thought, and its tragedies. He proposes new paths and offers powerful examples to ward off decadence, and to understand the history in which we are immersed and in which we lead our lives.

Review
"What will awaken Europeans from their sleep? Venner says it will be the shock of history - the shock evoking the tradition that made them (and makes them) who they are." -Michael O'Meara, Counter-Currents

From the Inside Flap
'We are in possession of a spiritual heritage that has nothing to envy in those of other great civilisations, but we are unaware and misinformed about it. To this massive spiritual crisis of Western nihilism, we must provide our own answers. [...] There are no universal answers to the questions of existence and behaviour. Every civilisation has its truths and its gods, all respectable so long as they do not threaten our existence. Every civilisation creates its own answers, without which the individial, man or woman, lacking identity and archetypes, is thrown into a world of chaos. Like plants, men cannot exist without roots. Every individual must discover his own.' -p. 80

'Concerning Europe, it seems as though we will be forced to rise up and face immense challenges and fearsome catastrophes even beyond those posed by immigration. These hardships will present the opportunity for both a rebirth and a rediscovery of ourselves. I believe in those qualities that are specific to the European people, qualities currently in a state of dormancy. I believe in our active individuality, our inventiveness, and in the awakening of our energy. This awakening will undoubtedly come. When? I do not know, but I am positive that it will take place.' -p. 25

'[Cato the Younger] then set out to kill himself as an act of total freedom, in order provoke a rebirth of the tradition that died with him.' -p. 45

About the Author
Dominique Venner (1935-2013) was a French writer and historian. He wrote over fifty books about history, specialising in the history of weapons and hunting. He served as a paratrooper during the Algerian War, and was jailed for 18 months for his involvement with the Organisation of the Secret Army, which sought to retain French Algeria through armed insurrection. He was subsequently involved in a decade of intense political activism, and also worked with Alain de Benoist's 'New Right' organisation, GRECE. Before his decision to publicly end his life in 2013, the goal of which was to awaken the minds of his European compatriots, he was in charge of the Nouvelle Revue de l'Histoire. His last book, Un Samouraï d'Occident, was published shortly after his death.

Enjoyed this book very much. Great treatment of Iliad and the Odyssey from a European perspective. The book is also full of insight into pan European nationalism whose time has come if Western Culture is to survive. Hail this great man.

A collection of interviews with the author by the author
By Jackal
Two years ago, the author killed himself in a French cathedral so that people would realise that the Western culture has to be invigorated. That is clearly an act of lunacy, but it could make for an interesting author. Sadly, it did not.

The book is a write-up of a set of interviews conducted by a journalist (update: conducted by the author himself - wtf?). The interviewer hardly ever asks follow up questions. So most of the book is superficial. Here is some of the topics covered: biographical details, author's inspirational writers, the assassination attempt of Hitler, nobility and sacrifice for the nation, suicide as a political statement, Homer as the origin of European civilisation, the negative tendency towards abstraction in Western thought.

Sadly there is no depth in the book. Let me still highlight a few ideas that I found very interesting. I am not convinced about their accuracy, but I would have been willing to listen to the author's arguments.
- After the Second World war, Europe was divided by the US and the USSR. What we think of as Western values are in fact US values. European history was deep frozen during the Cold War, but has begun to move again.
- Europe's crisis is existential because Europeans have lost touch with their roots. Those roots are the pre-Christian roots, in particular Homer's writing. The fashionable new ideology of humanism (i.e. we are all the same) is a key problem. The ideology is not grounded in identity (e.g. nation, land, blood). A parallel is made between the two world wars and the opium wars in China. In both situations a great civilisation was paralysed and destructive for several decades.
- Christianity made people false because they started to say that they loved their enemy, but in reality, of course, no such love existed. This has created a weakness. The weakness is getting stronger because the Christian church has lost all connections with the more truthful pagan culture after the Second World War.
- European culture is unique because it has given women a large social presence since antiquity.
- There was a European community among the ruling nobility in the 19th century. It was democratisation in the early 20th century that led to national hatred and the First World War.

A lot of ideas seem to come from Metamorphoses of the City: On the Western Dynamic so you might want to read that book instead. Update: I bought the book and tried to read it. It is difficult so on second thoughts you might abstain.

None of the author's books have prior been translated to English. I do not understand why the publisher chose to translate this book. (Update: See conversation with publisher in comments.) It can hardly be the author's most interesting book. The author must already have been mad when writing, because he seriously thinks that suicide will make people listen to him. While I appreciate the publisher's effort to introduce the author to an English-speaking audience, I seriously question the choice of book to translate. Is it really the author's best book? I doubt it. I will give the book two stars.
