Introduction to Parents and Caregivers -

If you are the parent or caregiver of an anxious child, you know what it feels like to be held hostage. So does your child. Children who worry too much are held captive by their fears. They go to great lengths to avoid frightening situations, and ask the same anxiety-based questions over and over again. Yet the answers give them virtually no relief. Parents and caregivers find themselves spending huge amounts of time reassuring, coaxing, accommodating, and doing whatever else they can think of to minimize their child’s distress.

But it doesn’t work. The anxiety remains in control. As you have undoubtedly discovered, simply telling an anxious child to stop worrying doesnÂ’t help at all. Nor does applying adult logic, or allowing your child to avoid feared situations, or offering reassurance every time the fears are expressed.

Anxiety has a way of growing, spreading, shifting in form, and generally resisting efforts to talk it out of existence. But there is hope. What to Do When You Worry Too Much will teach you and your child a new and more successful way to think about and manage anxiety. Kids can relate to the ideas in the book. - Updated 09/21/15

When your child's anxiety overtakes and consumes their joy, you'd buy 200 books if they'd help your child to feel better. Don't buy 200 books... BUY THIS ONE for your child.

My daughter is 9, but reads at 8th grade level, so I was a bit apprehensive about getting this book for her; fearing she'd think it was too baby-ish. Much to my surprise and delight, she loves the book! She says "I love the pictures. It's kind of funny and I like that it has activities to do. The book has good ideas about how to fix my worries."

The book does have great kid-friendly concepts like: Worry Time and Worry Bully, with places to draw and write down thoughts. It not only addresses how worries can take over, but empowers kids to fight back and reassures them that when they do, the worries will get smaller and smaller, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY...LOSE THEIR POWER OVER YOUR CHILD.

The book talks about the positives of getting rid of worries, like giving kids more time to play with their friends instead of worrying. Simple concepts perhaps, but written in a way that kids relate. The concepts are ones that both kids and parents can easily remember and refer to, which also helps when the Worry Bully shows up unexpectedly.

Worried No More Worried No More - Second Edition: Help and Hope for Anxious Children by Aureen Wagner, PHD (this is an excellent resource for Cognitive-Behavioral therapy support; workbook pages in the back...) and the meditations books for children by Maureen Garth: StarbrightStarbright--Meditations for Children, Moonbeam Moonbeam: A Book of Meditations for Children, and Earthlight Earthlight (read together before bedtime to help your child visualize a safe, quiet place before they fall asleep...).

Update: 11/18/13

My daughters now 15 years old and doing well. A straight a student, she still struggles with OCD but has learned to manage it. This book definitely helped her at a time of need. I'm grateful we found it when we did. She still talks about her OCD bully. A management lesson she learned from this book.

Update: 08/17/14

Now 16, my daughter was cleaning out her room; updating for a more 'teen' theme and getting rid of some of her old stuff. In doing so she had a pile of 'to keep' books that she'd obviously outgrown, but still wanted to hang onto. This book was in that pile.

Her OCD still ebbs and flows through our lives, and the teen years with stressful events such as the thought of new AP classes and looking at colleges has brought on a rough summer. Despite this, she soldiers on and fights back her OCD bully successfully on most days.

I think this book showed her early on that fighting back is what you need to do to survive and thrive. It's still scary at times for both of us. I wonder what her life will be like when she has to face new challenges while OCD tags along, but I know that the lessons she learned early in this book, will be with her for a lifetime.

Update: 09/21/15

My daughter is now 17 and a senior in high school. Taking AP courses, acting in school theater productions, a member of the Forensics (Speech and Debate team) and in the Top 5% of her class. She's seeing both a counselor and a psychiatrist, and takes Prozac to help in the management of her OCD. She's looking to go to college, but can't quite bring herself to be very far away from home which limits her opportunities. She also fears learning how to drive, so looks towards urban areas with good bus systems for her future endeavors.

This book was a great help to us early on in our journey with OCD. While some kids will move pass their fears without the need for medication, others like my daughter may need this assistance to manage it.

My advice to other parents of kids with OCD is to continue to seek information for yourself, your child and your family. Fight back and use whatever weapons are at your disposal. Don't make the goal to 'fix it', rather make it to 'manage and live with it'.

When I ask my daughter: "If you could get rid of OCD would you do it?" She surprises me and always says: "No. Because it's part of what makes me who I am, and I like who I am." I guess the lesson I've learned from her response is that despite sometimes crippling anxiety, self-acceptance and love is still possible, which should give everyone hope for better days.

Highly Recommended for Anxious Kids (and parents, too!)

My son went through the exercises in this book with a therapist when he was nine years old, back in 2013. He still remembered several of the ideas from it. But his anxieties came back with a vengeance in early January of this year, so we picked up this book and What to Do When Your Brain Gets Stuck: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming OCD (What-to-Do Guides for Kids) to go through them again. We started having daily Worry Time, worked on breathing techniques, and started identifying "trash" thoughts that could be discarded.

It turned out that his anxieties were caused/exacerbated by an underlying medical condition, and he ended up spending 6 days in the hospital. The amazing thing was how brave he was during that time. He had all sorts of tests, shots, IVs, MRIs, and even surgery. Throughout the week, we'd still practice worry time, sort through the bad thoughts, conjure up our happiest memories, and do breathing and relaxation exercises. At one point, one of the nurses told him how brave he was. He said, "I don't feel brave. I'm such a fearful guy." But as they talked through how scared other kids can be (and how some of them might fight or scream or kick or cry) during the same situations, he said, "Maybe other kids aren't good at being afraid. I'm good at it now because I've had a lot of practice." I think that philosophy is exactly what this book is teaching -- how to manage and be brave despite the fears and worries that anyone might have.

As you may have guessed from my constant use of the word "we," I've been doing a lot of the exercises, too. You can probably imagine what was happening in my brain when we were in the ER due to bad lab results, and were looking at a biopsy and surgery on my 12-year old. Instead of letting myself get overwhelmed, I just sorted through the trash thoughts (I swore at them in my head most of the time), gave myself a daily worry time, and practiced the calming techniques.

I highly recommend this book for parents and kids suffering from intense anxiety and needing some practical steps to overcome it. The OCD one is also quite good for kids suffering from OCD, whether just the obsessive thoughts or the compulsions that come with them. Both books give you language to be able to talk to your kids about what they're going through and how to manage those thoughts.

Wonderful Resource! - Simple, Easy-to-Use Concepts to Help Kids (& Adults) Develop Skills for a Lifetime

This book turned out to be fantastic! We have had the book since early 2016 and it is now October. It has given our daughter a sense of control over anxiety and worry. She now has coping mechanisms and her symptoms and acting out behaviors have all but completely disappeared. She doesn't have to constantly use the steps in the book anymore (that we know of ;), but when she starts to worry, she usually remembers to apply the steps herself, and on that very rare occasion that a worry spills out, we are quick to remind her to start applying her steps, which so far, has quickly resolved any issues. She especially loves applying Logic (which we found out from an adult in therapy that this is exactly how a therapist starts attacking worries, which makes sense since the author is a professional), the Worry Box, and drawing pictures. At 6 years old, she could technically read this book, but it is longer than most 6 yr olds would comfortably read themselves. The type is a bit larger than it would be for an average adult - maybe 12-14 pt type, which makes it easier for littles trying to read. At first, we read the book together (meaning she sat in my lap while I read) and she enjoyed the pictures and drawing. Once in a great while, she'll even grab the book off the shelf and find a section on her own to reread to herself. This has been a great resource for us as parents when we weren't sure how or where to start when our child's anxiety started becoming an issue we all needed to face. It was a perfect step for us before going to a professional and we feel this book helped us avoid that next step. It's great for parents too - we learned quite a bit ourselves and can't we all use a few more things to help take some stress out of our lives! ;) Highly recommend!
