HEROES, ARISE!

— New Options for 5th Edition Heroes —

Deep voices of the giants chant in the hills and forests. Red-cloaked cultists gather to perform their unholy rites, and howling tribes of dust goblins ride out of the Western Wastes to sack villages and towns.

But you do not fear these things. You are a hero of Midgard—and by your skill, strength, luck, or the favor of the gods, you will become a legend. Midgard Heroes gives you everything you need to play in a 5th edition campaign set in the Midgard Campaign Setting.

Midgard Heroes for 5th Edition includes:

  • Rules for playing new PC races: centaurs, dragonkin, gearforged, kobolds, ravenfolk, shadow fey, trollkin, and more!
  • 7 new backgrounds: Corsair, Darkling, Fey-Touched, Nomad, Raider, and more!

Only magic and the warmth of hope keeps lights aglow when dread things prowl and the priestly wardings shake, bent by hideous demonic rage. In this dark time, new heroes must arise to claim the crowns of Midgard and restore the jewels to her scattered thrones. New heroes must lead a return to glory.

Midgard awaits!

The content included is high quality and highly useful for campaign building, however the book size is quite limited for the price.

Go ahead and grab this, but split the cost.
By midnightwillow
CONS:
-Tiny, tiny book. 26 pages. Put money together with a friend to grab it, and photocopy yourself a copy. Literally what I did.
-Costs too much for the content.
-Most of the new races I would never consider playing as a character. Kobolds are a playable race in this book. I can't do it, all I hear when looking at it is "Don't take my candle!" Wrong game, but point stands. Most of the new races are monsters repurposed as playable characters.
-Several of the new backgrounds are modifications of the ones in the PHB. Pirate. You can be a PIRATE. Which is really just a modified sailor.
-Flimsy book. Remember those work books you used in grade school? Long pages stabled down the middle and folded over? Yeah, this is put together like that.

PROS:
-Shadowfey. I loved the concept of the shadowfey, a sort of elf-fey hybrid. This is the only playable race I would consider playing. Since I paid for half the book, this was worth it to me.
-To WoW players, former (I quit after pandas...) and current, the trolls are a playable race! Minotaur, ravenfolk! Many of these are similar to WoW races, for good or bad (I'm listing it as good). For the Horde?
-This has a more "dark fantasy' feel to it than the PHB, with Darlking being a literal background. For people who enjoy characters leaning a little to the evil side, this is a great edition.

To sum it up for you, here is a complete list of the new races and backgrounds.
Races:
Alseid (centaurs, basically. Dear instead of horse, elf instead of human)
Centaur (nuff said)
Dragonkin
Elf Varients: Windrunner Elves (nomads, basically just woood elves), River Elves (new variant of high elf), dark elves (basically drow, but never lived in the underdark), Shadowfey (listed twice for some reason? As an elf variant and as its own race?), and Elf-Marked (half elves... just a few generations down). These in total do not cover more than a page and are more short descriptions than anything else.
Gearforged: androids? Automatons with personalities.
Goul, Darakul: *cough* Forsaken *cough*
Kobold: They don't have candles and look like dragons.
Minotaur
Ravenfolk: Bird people.
Shadowfew: Elves who ran off to the fey realm and come back from time to time. my favorite of the bunch.
Trollkin: Like half orcs, but for trolls.

Backgrounds:
Corsair- Sea pirate
Dakling- Touched by evil
Fae Touched- Touched by fae
Guild Merchant- Literally a guild artisan variant. you travel to sell goods instead of make them.
Master Craftsmen- *crickets*
Nomad
Raider: Land Pirate

For all its faults, and they are many, this book is nonetheless fun to read and incorporate into the game. A lot of the ideas in here I would not have considered doing myself without the book, namely because it doesn't occur to me to be anything other than the Hero in campaigns. This plays on a dark element that PHB doesn't have in character creation.
In our latest campaign, our centaur barbarian was the queen of the battlefield, killing cultists left and right with her hooves alone... Only to be defeated by a ladder up the tower. Worth it! Also had my shadowfey rogue ride the centaur like a horse. And was promptly bucked off.

Pitch in with a friend or two to get this book, as that drastically lowers the price down. I photocopied it, which wasn't too bad considering its length, and let my friend keep the main book. I get closer to my moneys worth that way, as I enjoyed the content, but not at the offered price.

Also great because you can also buy this with the PDF ...

An asset to all role players and DM's unless you are a strict WoTC person. Also great because you can also buy this with the PDF which WoTC is too greedy to offer.
