some gaps

The CD-Rom sounded like a good idea, but it wasn't that useful, and it had some bugs. You can't just fill in the blanks. The text in the book was rather difficult to understand at times, and there are some gaps. I'd look at Shannon Pratt's book and also "Unlocking the Value of Your Business".

Best Business Valuation Book I Found Among Many

This is the only book I found that provides a quantitative method for determining how much to pay for a business and the factors that move that amount up or down. I use a number of the questions from the valuation questionnaire in the book, together with some of my own, to guide my first conversation with the owner of a business I am thinking about purchasing. This has so impressed several business brokers they they have asked for a copy of my list of questions. As with any book, it could have more information. I found that, although the CD is a great resource, it lacked industry information for several businesses I have evaluated as potential acquisitions.

About the Author
Gabriel Hawawini (Ph.D., New York University) is the Henry Grunfeld Chaired Professor of Investment Banking at INSEAD, where he is also a professor of finance and formerly served as dean. Professor Hawawini has taught finance at INSEAD, New York University, Columbia University, and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Helen Kardon Moss Anvil Award for Excellence in Teaching. In addition to teaching value-based management seminars around the world, Professor Hawawini is the author of ten books and more than seventy research papers on financial markets and corporate finance. He also sits on the boards of several companies.

Claude Viallet (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is emeritus professor of finance at INSEAD. Before joining INSEAD, he worked as a project manager at a major oil company and as chief financial officer of a service company in Paris. Professor Viallet has also served as president of the European Finance Association and has published widely in leading academic and professional journals. In addition to his tenure at INSEAD, Professor Viallet's teaching career includes service as a visiting professor of finance at the Kellogg School of Management of Northwestern University. He also organizes, directs, and teaches management-development programs in Europe, the United States, Asia, and Latin America and provides consulting services to companies around the world.

The author carefully and slowly paces you through the fundamentals in finance closely linked with business decisions based around "Value Creation for Stakeholders".

This book is extremely complex, almost bordering on calculus-style problems. It was used for an introductory class to finance with no prerequisites. A moderate knowledge of accounting and economics is essential to even open the book. Beware if this book is ever chosen for any entry level class. For someone focusing on becoming a financial adviser, investor or financial analyst this book offers a multitude of exposure. It is definitely for advanced users.

Interesting, Captivating and Thought-Provoking!

The historical-era that the author encompasses is of fundamental importance to the Islamic world and its implications on various Muslim communities in the present. The Ismaili's in the Middle Ages, is a detailed yet interesting account of how the various Ismaili communities managed to construct an identity via various tactics so as to respond to the challenges of the various religious and socio-political scopic-regimes within their lands.

The detective-like narrative style of the book makes it interesting and unique from the usual story book or academic treatise, because Shafique Virani starts off the book with a basic historical primer on various Muslims sects and the location of Shia-Ismailism within the particular context. Building upon this basic knowledge, the author references translations of various Saraiki, Gujarati, Russian, Arabic, Persian and other linguistic works along with informative critical analyses so as to cement the patches in the obscure history of the Ismaili's during this era. An era of uncertainty, when the Ismaili communities in the aftermath of the destruction caused by Genghis Khan and his hordes attempted to gather themselves together and successfully thrive through the continuum of time.

The book should not be taken as a mere historical-narrative of the invasion of the Mongols, rather it is an analysis of the various methods and strategies that the Ismaili's used to safe-guard their communities and religious-belief from other external threats during this time-period. It is almost like a success-story of a persecuted community almost bought to the brink of extinction due to the barbaric Mongol onslaught.

I think, the book is bound to provoke an emotionally tear-jerking response along with its factually authentic account of the community and how it re-structured and preserved its vibrant historical traditions and the core-belief in the "Imam of the Time" so as to emerge from the ashes almost like what Virani describes as a "Phoenix."

It should also be emphasized that Ismaili's in the Middle Ages is a not to be
taken lightly due to its engaging narrative as a mystery-book, rather it is a solid scholarly work that extracts information from solid and credible primary and secondary sources accompanied with detailed bibliographic referencing so as to allow the scholar or the curious average reader an opportunity to trail outside the covers of the book, and trace the origin of Shafique Virani's train of thought and interpretation of historical facts and arguments.

In culmination, I would say that this book is a must-read by any serious scholar of history, religion or even the general-reader who wants a good leisure read.

Hmm. I wouldn't recommended it. Archaic and outdated content.

OK. I will probably incur the wrath of the loyal readers of this class of books and of the hardware driver developers in general (and I honestly should be really careful with this dying breed of programmers) but I will say that I was not impressed with this book at all. Here's why:

1. In despite of the fact that they still sell it in 2014, the "latest" content that the book offers was introduced in 2007 in Windows Vista. I know that the basic concepts of the Windows kernel remained intact since the old NT days, but still, there was a lot of important stuff that was introduced since the early days of Windows NT, or even Vista. Look at Windows 8 for instance and all the changes to its kernel model. Why do you think TrueCrypt people gave up developing it? So the bottom line, the advice in this book barely holds for the modern desktop OS. It's OK if you develop for Windows 2000 or XP, maybe Vista. But no further.

2. The book doesn't have a reliable code sample. Seriously! For the book on such a complex subject as kernel driver development, they did not work on a good code sample? OK, OK. It does refer to one example of the source code on a diskette!, but then they add this note, and I quote, "Note carefully that this is simply a skeleton driver that does not provide for most of the functionality typically implemented by file system drivers..." and then this, "The code has not been tested, however, and should never be used as is without major enhancement and testing efforts on your part." Great!

OK, so it refers to some "diskette" (which is funny by itself) but OK, where is it? My copy of the book did not come with it. And to the best of my knowledge there's no URL to download it from. Also that source code sample that "I shouldn't be really using," is totally useless with the warning that they pointed out above.

In the preface to the book, the authors promise an update. But where is it? It is 7 years later now and still no update!

3. The book doesn't come in a PDF or epub format as a downloadable content. I mean, just a paper book would be OK for 1997, but not today. I don't know about you, but I cannot work with just a printed content without the ability to search or digitally bookmark it. This is a big downside for a developer that can't waste 10 minutes leafing through this paper book in search for certain parameter definition.

4. The book is highly OVERPRICED for what it delivers -- basically outdated content. I'd probably pay $10 for it, just as a relic or an artifact of a bygone era.

So the bottom line, do not waste your money on this book. You'd be better off asking at Stackoverflow or even Microsoft's own TechNet forums. And if you're a novice kernel driver developer (like me) you'll be totally frustrated with this archaic book.

PS. I should point out that even though I am a novice kernel driver developer, I have an extensive experience developing for Windows and Mac since mid 90's, with a lot of experience writing code in x86 Assembler, C and C++. So I'm no newbie when it comes to coding.

This is a serious implementors' book...

... despite the jacket's attempt to suggest an appeal to a wider audience. That said, if you are an implementor hoping to create a file system on NT, it's a god-send, since other sources of information on the subject (pretty much limited to Microsoft's undocumented IFS kit and various consulting groups) come with rather lofty price tags.
I should confess that I'm writing this review because it happens to be convenient right now, even though I'm less than half-way through the book (hey, what do you want for free?). However, what I've seen so far is sufficiently polished, complete, and to all appearances authoritative that it instills a great deal of confidence, especially given the complexity of the subject. I'm less convinced that Microsoft will have the discipline to keep its 'internal' (but of course critical) interfaces stable over the course of time, but that's not the author's fault (and perhaps when they change they'll decide it's finally time to document them).

An Unacknowledged Masterpiece

Except for the final entry in this masterly collection of essays, "Ultimate Terms in Contemporary Rhetoric," which has been widely reprinted in anthologies, the contributions of Weaver, a late professor of rhetoric at the University of Chicago, are not generally known. Yet at his best, Weaver's essays bear comparison with those of his favorite George Orwell. Like Orwell, Weaver was one of the truest humanists of our age and hence really cannot be accurately described with our labels of left-wing, centrist, or right-wing. Exposing the vicious or stupid to champion the humanly valuable was his forte; having a seemingly unerring sensibility for doing this, Weaver is always able to surprise his readers, forcing them to hold little dialectics with themselves to discover their ultimate beliefs and terms of persuasion. Whether he is restoring to a central place in the educational experience and in political speech the role of Eros, or explaining why Edmund Burke was a liberal but Abraham Lincoln a conservative, Weaver is always both a shock and a joy to read.

Well Worth The Investment

Weaver's writing have inspired me over the years in many ways. One cannot read his work without aspiring to a more noble manner of life as well as aim for it. In this work, one is inspired toward the goal of eloquence in the pursuit of persuasion.

Unlike a previous reviewer, I found Weaver's handling of Burke and Lincoln to be even handed. His analysis of their rhetoric cannot be entirely divorced from his own inclinations and I do not fault him for that. Like the first essay on the Phaedrus, Weaver does not accept the role of non-lover in his own rhetoric nor desire it of others.

What Weaver does very well is open our eyes to what ought to be self-evident - that the manner of our argumentation, the style of our attempt to persuade, reveals much about ourselves and the "ethic" of our rhetoric. As such, at least with me, it forces us to re-examine that which indeed we do hold dear and what our objectives truly are. In a world where most people confess principle yet argue from circumstance, knowing the difference between the two enables us to avoid hypocrisy in ourselves and at the same time, understand the filters which govern other's hearing.

Along the way, Weaver's examples, particularly his analysis of the Scope trials, awakens us to how rhetoric can function and how, just perhaps, a reawakening to it in in our culture, might immensely elevate the consciousness of our tribes. If the ethics of it were more widely regarded, the great issues of our day might indeed be discussed in a more compelling and enlightening manner.

As an undergrad with no particular affinity for rhetoric, this book is a wonderful source for anyone writing an essay on ethics in rhetoric.

I won't attempt the deep thoughts of these other reviewers, but I would reccomend it to anyone with the need or desire to learn about this subject.

About the Author
Kirun Kapur grew up in Hawaii and has since lived and worked in North America and South Asia. Her work has appeared in AGNI, Poetry International, FIELD, The Christian Science Monitor and many other journals and news outlets. She has taught creative writing at Boston University and has been a poetry fellow at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Vermont Studio Center and McDowell Colony. Her poems were awarded the 2012 Arts & Letters / Rumi Prize for Poetry. She lives in Massachusetts, where she is the creative director of The Tannery Reading Series.

Breathtaking

Beautiful and thought-provoking, the poems here are a wonderful mix of intimate family memories, recent history and myth. The imagery is colorful and striking, stories are humorous and harrowing by turns. The overall effect of the book is deeply moving, and it's heartily recommended.

This book of poems is a lovely mix of family and history, geography and poetry. The endorsement by Robert Pinsky (former US poet laureate) on the back says it all. Two thumbs up.

Certainly this cover grabbed my full attention even before I was treated to the poems inside."Heart is Not Ten or Twenty" is the title and the artist, S. H. Raza is a fascinating Indian painter who lived much of his life in France and then went back to India consciously ready to reinvent his art.

In Visiting Indira Gandhi's Palmist the reader understands the importance of (re)invention. In Kirun Kapur's debut collection, family stories of emigration and war shake hands with Chips Ahoy and the afterlife. There is much to admire in this heady mix of three generations moving across the page. A sense of (dis)location helps to create Kapur's surreal voice that this reader finds very appealing.

I want to look at two poems that will provide a sort of sliding scale for this book; poems that vary stylistically both in form and register. "My Father's Hopscotch" moves back and forth from literal geography: "Five rooftops---wide and flat ...Five rivers in the Punjab" to the hopscotch of global politics and pending war which comes together in the final stanza:

The infantry is restless. Rumors in the street.
Some rumbling, a mutiny: the East is lost,
turn back, return to Greece. Roof to roof,
he leaps, he presses across the map.

Clearly Elizabeth Bishop's "The Map" and "Geography III" are also pressing on this poem --- in a very good way. The poem is filled with internal rhyme "street / mutiny / Greece" and there's an iambic ghost throughout much of the poem. I admit that the poems looking back on the speaker's father are among my favorite. The intermingling of history and family, father and daughter is a personal preference. Having admitted that, I almost want to take it back because what I love about these poems is how well they're written. No sentimentality; no easy escapes.

The poem "Nobody Nation" is written in flash points of an extended compass: west, east, north, south, and pacific. The notes at the back of the collection offer that Kapur's poem was inspired by Derek Walcott's famous line, "I'm nobody or I'm a nation" in his amazing poem, Schooner Flight. In Kapur's five sections we watch as a child learns the ugly indignities of racism along an Arizona highway, in a history book, and while working for a wealthy couple. Yet, in the last section the father is sworn in as (we assume) a US citizen. And he has the last word: I keep the good lines for myself.

From the independence of a nation as India breaks away from Great Britain, to the growth of an educated family living in exile, this book offers me (and I suspect many American citizens) a new window into the world. These are complex poems that I've returned to several times over the last few months. Poems that I believe will stay with me for a long time to come.

Kirun Kapur is a multi-talented poet able to write well in many different forms. This will benefit her (and us as readers) as she continues her career. This is a poet we are sure to hear more from. The poems are necessary --- smart and funny. And very clearly poems for these times.
