Misleading description...find the whole package cheaper elsewhere.

This book does not include the Connect pass code as it says in the description, a commonly required complimentary software. I ordered this book because it said it included the software I needed for my class for a competitive price (for the book + the software). I just got the book, have an assignment due in two days and no software, just a three week pass code and the expectancy that I shell out another $75 for a semester's software pass.

The software/ book combo price on Amazon is more expensive than it is in the school bookstore.

The semester just started so I've only flipped through the book and it looks like just any other text book.

Book is what was required for both classes so the price was easier to accept but compared to other accounting books this seems les organized n a bit hard to really learn from... its a bit scattered. I prefer other writers for the book

I rented this book on my kindle app for iPad for $127.00 and now they want me to pay another $75.00 for an access code so I can take quizzes and do required assignments. The description states it includes the access codes yeah well that's a lie!

A great book

This book cuts the edge on Internet GIS. Although the IT world has changed a lot since the book was publised in 2003, the main frame of Internet GIS has not. And this book does not just introduce techniques, it is fascinating to see how Internet GIS works at background. It's a great book for a person with some GIS knowledge and wants to know more advanced GIS application in sharing data and services.

Akash Shukla attended Rutgers Preparatory School in NJ where he wrote for and edited the school paper. When he decided to go through the torturous Limb Lengthening surgery, Akash decided to write a book about his unique experience. After the surgery, Akash attended Drexel University in Philadelphia but later transferred to NJIT in Newark, NJ. Today, he is a third year student in Industrial Engineering at NJIT and writes for the college news-paper. Rahul Shukla is a successful industrialist and a writer. He is President/CEO of S.S. White Technologies and Shukla Medical. The companies make aircraft and automotive parts and orthopedic surgical tools. A computer techie, photographer, and a motivational speaker, Rahul is a born story teller. Rahul and his wife Meena are proud parents of their writer-son Akash.

Great story of courage and personal growth

Shukla's book, The Measure of a Man pulls you in instantly. It will tug on your heart strings making you laugh and cry. I read the book to my sister while she was recovering from an accident - It was fascinating - couldn't turn the pages fast enough - along with the tears it kept us laughing. Just awesome! You immediately identify with the open and forthcoming Shukla family facing this unbelievably difficult choice of leg lengthening surgery. It then becomes this great story of courage and personal growth - the therapy problems, strategizing with the doctors, and a mysterious side effect keeps you turning pages and holding your breath for a young man who seems to have unending tolerance and courage while maintaining a sense of humor. This is a wonderful true story about the triumph of human spirit and the power of family love. I highly recommend it - I promise you've never read another book like it. Great for a book club.

This book is an awesome book. The book kept me going from the first word till the last one. It talks about a man who goes through life making one tough decision after another. Measure of a man takes the reader on a roller coaster ride which does not end untill the book is finished. This book is written for all ages to read and its perfect for those who are making tough decisions themselves.

Finish reading this book, my deepest feeling is that, this is not only a story of braveness and courage, but throws a question that each person, no matter in easy life or during toughest times, that how do you define "POSSIBLE" in your own world.

The story begins with an almost unsolvable problem, through the entire book you can find a great amount of times when the only answer to keep going is "impossible". It impressed me deeply that this family never take "No" as an answer. When you face unsolvable questions with faith, confidence, relentlessness, and courage, to take full initiative of your own life, you will find yourself break the definition of "POSSIBLE" and "IMPOSSIBLE" time by time, then you would do amazing things and make your life better.

I almost delete the world "impossible" from my dictionary, whenever this world appear in my mind, I would recall the stories in the book, hold for a minute and then go ahead search for even a tiny piece of possibility.

The ceque system of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca empire, was perhaps the most complex indigenous ritual system in the pre-Columbian Americas. From a center known as the Coricancha (Golden Enclosure) or the Temple of the Sun, a system of 328 huacas (shrines) arranged along 42 ceques (lines) radiated out toward the mountains surrounding the city. This elaborate network, maintained by ayllus (kin groups) that made offerings to the shrines in their area, organized the city both temporally and spiritually.

From 1990 to 1995, Brian Bauer directed a major project to document the ceque system of Cusco. In this book, he synthesizes extensive archaeological survey work with archival research into the Inca social groups of the Cusco region, their land holdings, and the positions of the shrines to offer a comprehensive, empirical description of the ceque system. Moving well beyond previous interpretations, Bauer constructs a convincing model of the system's physical form and its relation to the social, political, and territorial organization of Cusco.

A large step in the right direction

After many years of the study of the Cusco Ceque System being dominated by what I might characterize as ethnohistorically-oblivious astronomy-- the ground-breaking but ultimately limited studies by R. Tom Zuidema in particular-- Brian S. Bauer has shed (most of) the shortcomings of many of his scholarly predecessors and released the first compelling and (mostly) complete study on the geography of the Ceque System, the administrative, political, astronomical, social, and spiritual system that helped the Inkas effectively govern their empire (so much so, in fact, that in an empire of millions, nobody went hungry).

I say that this is a study of the Geography of the Ceque System because some other works-- those of Zuidema and Anthony Aveni, and the unpublished research of Peruvian master archeologist Manuel Chavez Ballon-- are perhaps more in depth when it comes to the astronomical and water-related principles contained within the System. Bauer indeed seems to maintain as his focus the discovery of the locations of the 328 (more or less) huacas-- sanctuaries that act as the nodes or dots along the ceque lines. In so doing, he provides the evidence necessary to deconstruct and discard the long outdated theory (maintained by Zuidema) that the ceques are perfectly straight lines. As such, Bauer reminds scholars and readers alike that under the holistic approach of the Inkas, a system as complex as the one in question Cannot truthfully be viewed as Solely astronomical, an affirmation that the Zuidema model (at least indirectly) endorses.

Shortcomings? Bauer perhaps could have stood a year or two more of field work to fill in the holes in his maps of the system. And, in order to present a work of broader interest, he perhaps would have been wise to present more of the theories of his contemporaries. The near absense of findings by colleagues like Zuidema and Aveni leaves a somewhat limited picture of the System, providing the reverse negative form of these previous works-- in other words, whereas Zuidema focused too much attention on astronomy and the straight-line-theory, Bauer thoroughly ignores them. Also, an appendix by a linguist colleague provides highly questionable and often poorly-researched Quechua names for the huacas examined. Because of these (minor) qualms, the book is at a 3.5 or 4 star level and not higher.

As it stands, though, this book is an invaluable addition to the library of any serious student of the ceques, the Inka empire, its organizational principles, and other related topics as diverse as the Nazca lines and Andean astronomy. For the student of ley lines and geodetic formations, this book can also provide interesting contrast. Ultimately, Bauer can be proud of his addition to the study of the Inkas and Andean civilization in general. He reminds us that it was a pristine civilization that appeared in this region of the world, and that even through Chavin, Nazca, Tiwanaku, and Inka permutuations, Andean culture and science was wholly unique.

A Great Contribution by Bauer

This remarkable book by Brian Bauer has 263 pages stuffed with lots of detailed information on each of the shrines of the Inca ceque system of Cusco. The ceques are represented by an elaborate collection of shrines that dot the countryside around Cusco, the capital of the pre-historic Inca Empire.

Bauer is a hard worker, a scholar, and eager to help others learn about the Inca. In the Sacred Landscape publication, all three of these qualities are apparent.

For the armchair traveler, Bauer provides 128 photographs and lots of maps, figures and tables that help explain the Inca ceque system. His descriptions are easy to read and understand.

For the scientist, Bauer draws upon the research of famous archaeologists and anthropologists like Manuel Chavez Ballon, John Rowe, Susan Niles and Tom Zuidema, plus the writings of early chroniclers.

Bauer's field research started in 1990. Since then he visited and recorded many Cusco area shrines, both natural features and Inca structures. However, I wish that Bauer had done more research on my favorite huaca, known as the Cruzmoco, overlooking Tipon, even though it may not have been part of the ceque system.

The review by RobingVL was well done, but too critical of issues not covered. Bauer's topic was the landscape, not the ethnology; after all, he had less than 300 pages to cover all his work in!

Overall, Bauer gets high marks on this book. I give him five stars for his fine contribution to Andean scholarship.

Excellent resource for selecting between OS ESBs and learning them

This book has helped me a great deal in selecting which ESB we should use. The intro sections are excellent for this purpose. The examples are mostly in mule and servicemix but a number of other ESBs are covered in both summary form and in examples that proves to be highly valuable when formulating your selection.

The other related plus point is that the authors provide you with a view into the roadmap of the ESBs (especially ServiceMix and Mule) so that you can see where they are going in the current beta releases. In a dynamic opensource base this is essential since things change so quickly and books become quickly out of date. The website also has useful material.

The same examples are given in mule and servicemix throughout the chapters and this helps you to think about how best you would use the technology and you can formulate conclusions like "AHAH...Mule requires me to import less ESB classes and stay decoupled from the ESB better", or "Servicemix requires less code to do this type of routing".

The source code for the examples is provided via a website complete with junit code and ant files to run them. This is excellent since it proves really easy to get some handson experience and (for example) see the differences in startup times and hotdeployment capabilities between the ESBs.

The other rather innovative addition is that it lets you download the ebook for free using a codewheel in the book. This proves useful for referencing material and answering those "what was the page that talked about X" questions you have while reading the book.

I hate to give a book 5 out of 5 but this is really very good for those just getting into ESBs and especially for people trying to decide which ESB to use.

A good book. + I got the pdf version free.. So in case you are planning to buy only PDF version, you can put few bucks extra and get hard copy and soft copy too. I particularly wanted this for Mule.
*** However for mule I feel the mule source documentation and user guide (on mulesource.org) is also quite well (if u have read EAI book by Harpe and Woolf).. especially if you try out the examples on your own.

Not really worth it

This package comes with:
- A storage box with a magnetic flap that opens it from the top (swings open).
- Nuka Cola caps, bottle opener, and patch
- Calendar
- Collector's edition strategy guide with hardcover book cover, includes S.P.E.C.I.A.L. lithographs and map of the game world.

On Amazon, you can get the last set of items (minus power armor art cover) for ~$25.
This leaves about 78 dollars minus about 25 dollars -> about 52 dollars for a calendar, some bottle caps, bottle opener, patch, and storage/display box. Really not worth it in my book. It will make for a nice decoration, but not worth it for what you get. It is essentially overpriced memorabilia for die-hard fans that bought into the hype.

If you want the lithographs, map, and strategy guide, then buy it from Amazon for much cheaper. If you realllly want the other goodies, then I'm not stopping you, but this is what you get for the cost.

Missing Lithograph card....

I was highly impressed with this book, however inside the Vault-Tech Sleeve mine came without a "A" lithograph!? i only got six out of the seven!?

Save your money buy the 23 dollar book!

I felt like it was a rip off in a way. Your paying more than double the price for a calendar, bottle caps and bottle opener and a sleeve that goes over the book. You take the sleeve off and its the same book that only cost 23 bucks.

Rajan Suri is Professor of Industrial Engineering at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. Dr. Suri serves as Director of the Center for Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM), a consortium of over 40 firms working with the university on understanding and implementing QRM strategies. He is internationally regarded as an expert on the analysis of manufacturing systems, specializing in lead time reduction and time-based competitiveness. Dr. Suri is author of over 100 technical publications and has chaired three international conferences on manufacturing systems.

Dr. Suri has consulted for leading firms, including 3M, Alcoa, AT&T, Ford, General Motors, McDonnell-Douglas, and Xerox. He received a Bachelor's degree in Engineering from Cambridge University, England, and a Master's and Ph.D. in Engineering from Harvard University.

Cut the lead time and make more money! Simple.

I purchased this based on the recommendation of one of the Black Belts from a smaller plant at my company. He has been successfully implementing these procedures for quite a few months now, and has shown some significant results. I'm impressed, and I think Dr. Suri is on the right path with this. Though it is somewhat dismissive of Lean / Six Sigma as methodologies, I do see them as complimentary to QRM, along with ToC and other methods. It's all about taking the best aspects of each and employing them in a successful manner.

Pros:
- Covers not only the manufacturing side (the plant), but goes into detail on the office as well, where we find significant lead time created in the processes
- Works extremely well in a job shop environment. We're largely high variation, low volume products, almost one-off in most cases, and QRM provides an excellent fit.
- The discussions of the response time spiral are spot on. We fall victim to this constantly. It's all about creating flexible environments focused on delivering proper value (sounds a bit like Lean, eh?)

Cons:
- Too much negative commentary on "competing" methodologies, where any of us with some experience realize that each has its good and bad, and to not trust the salesmen of any one method

Overall, it's an excellent book, though a dry and academic read, and should be seriously investigated by any manufacturing manager, operations person, quality, or continuous improvement implementer.

Focuses on today's manufacturing climate

As a former manager of strategic planning, now returned to the manufacturing side, I consider this book to be one of the most important I have read over the past several years. What I am seeing in manufacturing is that the cookie cutter products, high tech or not, are moving to either Asia or Mexico. The remaining products are being sold to customers who require a high level of customization on a very short lead time. The author has developed a system to accomplish this. He focuses not just on the nuts and bolts of the shop floor, but also on streamlining the support systems needed to achieve this level of service. If you are in high level manufacturing or corporate management, you need to read this book. If you are at a lower level, you will still be exposed to many ideas which you can incorporate into improving your service, to both internal and external customers, and reducing your lead times. I think it ranks right up there with The Goal as one of the most important business books written in the era of modern manufacturing.
