Tod Polson first studied design at Otis/Parsons, and animation at CalArts before apprenticing under pioneering animation designer Maurice Noble. Since then, he has worked extensively as a filmmaker, designer, and teacher. He lives in Wyoming.

The New Bible of Animation Design

If you're reading this review, you obviously don't need an introduction to who Maurice Noble was. His contributions as a designer and layout man to such landmark animated films as RABBIT SEASONING, WHAT'S OPERA DOC?, DUCK AMUCK, ROBIN HOOD DAFFY, the Road Runner series, and DUCK DODGERS IN THE 241/2TH CENTURY make his name as firmly inseparable from them as the director Chuck Jones's.

Tod Polson was a protégé of Noble's who has finally realized his generous teacher's dream of putting all of Noble's notes and theories on animation design in book form. You'll first learn about Noble's history and find out how things were like in the ever-evolving Golden Age of animation, and then how things got so bad that Noble was afraid the wisdom he mistook for common knowledge would vanish into the ether - hence why he wanted his thoughts recorded in the first place!

If you want to know how Noble did it and how you can possibly instill some of his own virtues into your work, don't just watch the films. Let Polson take you on this very intimate journey and show you how Noble took care to make sure his design met the needs of every single element of an animated film and not the other way around. More importantly, the book is lavishly and colorfully illustrated to appropriately aid the instructions, driving home every point clearly and beautifully.

Anyone with an interest in animation, filmmaking, or art in general should buy this book without hesitation. It'd be the Noble thing to do!

Good book for those into animation and design

[[VIDEOID:mo2IKTQCAW23DW5]]The Noble Approach is a book that's part biography and part animation design tips featuring the late great Maurice Noble.

As a kid, I would watch the Warner Bros cartoons and never think about things like art and design. They are good which is why people watch them.

Well, in this book, you'll go behind the scenes and look at the person who has a hand at creating some of these animated productions, and understand his design philosophies.

Author Tod Polson who has apprenticed under Noble has done a good job with the biography detailing the designer's life and career right from the start. It's an inspiring tale of someone who has gone through a tumultuous period, with the need to support his family while still young, going through various career changes, having the ups and downs with co-workers, while still maintaining the passion to put out good design for animation and screen.

The biography is about a third of the book. The rest are his philosophies on design. It's on how he handles story beats, story elements, using reference, contrast, simplifying elements, colour theory, perspective, layout, and more. The text and the illustrated examples are insightful. It's a collection of design principles he has learned and compiled over the 60 years he spent in the industry.

It's a good book for those into animation and design, or into traditional animation design.

A must have book on the best layout artist!

Maurice Noble was the biggest influence on me in my decision to enter the animation arena. Maurice created most of the layouts (the backgrounds) for Chuck Jones during the classic Warner Bros. cartoons era. As a kid, I would specifically look for Maurice's and Chuck's names to appear in the credits, because I knew it was going to be a great cartoon.

I now have a wonderful companion book to Frank & Ollie's "The Illusion of Life" as a valuable learning guide to study the masters of animation.

Jay M. Shafritz is professor emeritus of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. He is the author, co-author, or editor of more than 40 textbooks and reference books on business and public administration. He holds a doctorate from Temple University and an MPA from the Baruch College of the City University of New York.

Lee S. Weinberg is an attorney and Associate Professor of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author or co-author, or editor of four books and over a hundred articles in newspapers, magazines, and journals. He holds a doctorate in political science and a J.D. degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Amazing book!

John Byrne Fires Up the F.F. Again

The Fantastic Four used to proclaim themselves "The World's Greatest Comic Mag(azine)" Well under Byrne's helm it could rightfully be said so.

The trick of revitatalizing a franchise is to know what to take, what to emulate, what to improve upon and what to leave behind. Byrne is going full steam ahead.

Byrne builds on the characters without forgetting their roots. He touches on the great FF epics while telling new stories. It looks like a combo of Stan and Jack with a litle Larry Niven style science fiction thrown in.

The book starts out with a trip into the Negative Zone. Along the way they encounter many a science fiction twist while all the time trouble is brewing in the Baxter Building that brings in no less than the Avengers (another series Byrne worked on).

This book includes the famous "widescreen" version that had to be read sideways (but alas the free tattoo inserts are not reprinted).

With Annihilus and Galactus as villians and a case that leads right back to the second fantastic four adventure way back in F.F. #2 how could you go wrong??

Early experiments

3-1/2 stars. I consider volumes 3, 6 & 7 in this series to be about average to slightly above average in quality. If the 2nd paperback was a solid step forward in figure drawing, this 3rd edition almost seems like 2 steps back? What happened?...

The end of the 2nd edition gives us Byrne's famous issue #249, to this day some of the best artwork he's ever produced. You'd think he would continue on to bigger & better things. Instead, Byrne gets highly experimental in both story and art here, perhaps as a reaction to seemingly reaching his artistic zenith. This isn't a bad collection of experiments; it's just that my expectations for this volume were for something so much better.

Included in this 3rd volume: about 5 issues dealing with the Negative Zone, Franklin & Annihilus, one having a sideways layout for the art; Daredevil & Avengers as brief guest stars dealing with Annihilus; a Thing solo story; a Galactus, Nova & Skrulls conflict; and a FF Annual with pencils & colors only (no inks).

The experimental nature of this edition is obvious. That sideways issue and the annual with no inks are both out of the ordinary. Byrne's inks too take on a new direction: being now a little more loose & unrefined, a bit like Frank Miller's eighties Marvel work. The Negative Zone story arc has an early Sci-Fi/ Star Trek feel to it. It's not that any of this stuff is really all that bad. It's just that I consider the other volumes in Byrne's run to be that much better.

Reproduction values not entirely up to par...

The stories and artwork in this volume are classic, but I find it disappointing that a substantial chunk of the book suffers from poor, muddy reproduction of the linework. This is not a minor point since (1) Byrne's artwork is detailed, and easily suffers from dropouts and blotchiness if it isn't reproduced carefully and (2) the original publication dates of these comics wasn't so long ago that there isn't any reason not to put out a top quality job. Fortunately, only a portion of the reprints in this edition suffer from this problem, and the other volumes in this series have crisp reproduction throughout (as of this writing, Volume 5 is the most recent volume to be published).
