About the Author
Kirun Kapur grew up in Hawaii and has since lived and worked in North America and South Asia. Her work has appeared in AGNI, Poetry International, FIELD, The Christian Science Monitor and many other journals and news outlets. She has taught creative writing at Boston University and has been a poetry fellow at The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Vermont Studio Center and McDowell Colony. Her poems were awarded the 2012 Arts & Letters / Rumi Prize for Poetry. She lives in Massachusetts, where she is the creative director of The Tannery Reading Series.

Breathtaking

Beautiful and thought-provoking, the poems here are a wonderful mix of intimate family memories, recent history and myth. The imagery is colorful and striking, stories are humorous and harrowing by turns. The overall effect of the book is deeply moving, and it's heartily recommended.

This book of poems is a lovely mix of family and history, geography and poetry. The endorsement by Robert Pinsky (former US poet laureate) on the back says it all. Two thumbs up.

Certainly this cover grabbed my full attention even before I was treated to the poems inside."Heart is Not Ten or Twenty" is the title and the artist, S. H. Raza is a fascinating Indian painter who lived much of his life in France and then went back to India consciously ready to reinvent his art.

In Visiting Indira Gandhi's Palmist the reader understands the importance of (re)invention. In Kirun Kapur's debut collection, family stories of emigration and war shake hands with Chips Ahoy and the afterlife. There is much to admire in this heady mix of three generations moving across the page. A sense of (dis)location helps to create Kapur's surreal voice that this reader finds very appealing.

I want to look at two poems that will provide a sort of sliding scale for this book; poems that vary stylistically both in form and register. "My Father's Hopscotch" moves back and forth from literal geography: "Five rooftops---wide and flat ...Five rivers in the Punjab" to the hopscotch of global politics and pending war which comes together in the final stanza:

The infantry is restless. Rumors in the street.
Some rumbling, a mutiny: the East is lost,
turn back, return to Greece. Roof to roof,
he leaps, he presses across the map.

Clearly Elizabeth Bishop's "The Map" and "Geography III" are also pressing on this poem --- in a very good way. The poem is filled with internal rhyme "street / mutiny / Greece" and there's an iambic ghost throughout much of the poem. I admit that the poems looking back on the speaker's father are among my favorite. The intermingling of history and family, father and daughter is a personal preference. Having admitted that, I almost want to take it back because what I love about these poems is how well they're written. No sentimentality; no easy escapes.

The poem "Nobody Nation" is written in flash points of an extended compass: west, east, north, south, and pacific. The notes at the back of the collection offer that Kapur's poem was inspired by Derek Walcott's famous line, "I'm nobody or I'm a nation" in his amazing poem, Schooner Flight. In Kapur's five sections we watch as a child learns the ugly indignities of racism along an Arizona highway, in a history book, and while working for a wealthy couple. Yet, in the last section the father is sworn in as (we assume) a US citizen. And he has the last word: I keep the good lines for myself.

From the independence of a nation as India breaks away from Great Britain, to the growth of an educated family living in exile, this book offers me (and I suspect many American citizens) a new window into the world. These are complex poems that I've returned to several times over the last few months. Poems that I believe will stay with me for a long time to come.

Kirun Kapur is a multi-talented poet able to write well in many different forms. This will benefit her (and us as readers) as she continues her career. This is a poet we are sure to hear more from. The poems are necessary --- smart and funny. And very clearly poems for these times.

Cinch! Review-Simply Stacie

Cinch! is a new diet book by author Cynthia Sass, M.P.H, R.D. It is designed to help you "conquer cravings, drop pounds and lose inches." What initially drew me to this book is that the author co-wrote one of my favorite nutrition/diet books "The Flat Belly Diet." Once I started reading Cinch! I was drawn to the fact that this is not a "one diet fits all" book but rather it allows you to follow the program in the way that suits you best so that you have a better opportunity to succeed and meet your goals. For example, Cinch! starts with a very structured and effective 5 day "Fast Forward" menu which essentially tells you exactly what to eat and drink for the first five days to really kick start your efforts. There is even a helpful quiz that helps you determine if this would be a good fit for you or not. In my case, I decided not to do the 5 day "Fast Forward" because it is much easier for me not to follow a structured plan when I am cooking for a family of five, including three little ones. Instead, I utilized numerous components of the "Fast Forward" and went straight to the "Core" program.

Note: Though I do agree with the previous review post that the Five Day Options are very limited...it is a simple choice to skip it and go straight to the core plan that has many different meal options that are quite do-able for real families. As I stated, I skipped it altogether and had success eating meals that I adapted from the core suggestions.

In my opinion, one of the most attractive parts of the Cinch! methodology is that it is written by a nutritionist and health educator and it includes healthy and whole foods such as yogurt, eggs, turkey, lentils, fruits and my personal favorite dark chocolate! It even includes a little SASS.....What is that? SASS stands for "slimming and satiating seasonings." These are the five categories of SASS that you will use for the first 30 days (and beyond) and includes vinegar, citrus juice and zest, hot peppers (yum!), tea (it gets better and better) and herbs and spices. I have always loved to season my food with vinegar, hot sauce and a variety of other seasonings so it is wonderful that it is actually encouraged as part of my eating program.

I was very impressed with the Cinch! core program that includes delicious recipes such as Black Bean Tacos with Cilantro-Jalapeno Guacamole. This recipe was a big hit with my husband and little ones too as it tasted simply fantastic. In the morning, I am not typically a big eater so the Strawberry Cardamom Smoothie with Cashew Oatmeal was a great way to start the day and gave me lots of energy to keep up with my kids. My children were thrilled that Cinch! includes lots of healthy fruits including grapes and berries and they were able to enjoy healthy snacks along with me during the day. I also liked taking the "My Size" quiz to perfectly customize the core to my body which worked out really well for me.

The Cinch! Core program really is an all inclusive healthy eating guide for anyone looking to find new inspiration for their diet or to lose weight and since I am seeking to do both it is a perfect fit for me. By following the Cinch! program you can possibly "lose up to 7 pounds in the first 5 days and 15 pounds in 30 days." Now remember that I chose to skip the initial 5 day "Fast Forward" but I have still lost 8 pounds in the 19 days that I have followed the Cinch! eating plan. I am well on my way to losing those last 30 post pregnancy pounds which have stubbornly followed me for the last three years. I feel satiated, energetic and honestly better than I have in a long time.

I got Cinched!

Cinch! started out as diet and then easily became a happily lifestyle choice. Growing up, I consumed at least 2 soda cans per day, ate tons of processed foods, and would have constant energy dips throughout the day. I was nervous to try Cinch! because I had zero concept of nutrition, barely prepared meals, and nothing just seemed to work for me.

Cynthia does a great job explaining how this plan nourishes your body, the long & short term health effects, exactly what to do, and why. Ever do a diet and think "this makes no sense to me, but I'm desperate to do lose weight?" I sure did! And then a few weeks later I would always fall right off because I didn't understand the reasoning behind the method.

The book has meal plans for 30 days. I followed the meal plans exactly for the first week in order to completely reset my body and discover new tastes. The 5 piece puzzle gives you an unlimited number of choices that allow you to cater meals to your liking. My old habits and cravings disappeared within the first few days! I immediately realized that my body functions perfectly when I treat it right. Cinch! helped me understand the difference between mental and physical hunger. It's a huge relief to not be constantly thinking about food. Food used to consume my mind more than my mouth!

I know it can come off as cheesy - but Cinch! really was the best decision I ever made. I lost a significant amount of weight (I've gone from a size 10 to a size 4) and I don't feel restricted or deprived. It feels amazing that I've shrunk so much but I don't feel like I'm "on a diet". I usually eat out with friends about 4 times a week. At work, I bring my own lunch and snacks in order to save money. I got rid of the junk food in my desk and stocked it with healthy options. I also keep larabars and nuts in my purse so I always have something on the go. Cinch! became a lifestyle for me because it easily fits in my life. It's super easy to keep maintain and when you feel lighter, healthier and confident then trust me - you will never want to go back!!

Simply fantastic! (From a life-long healthy eater who ALWAYS thinks about food!)

Cinch is an absolute GODSEND. I cannot say enough good things about how it's taken my otherwise "fit and healthy" lifestyle to the next level, one which I'd never thought possible!! Rather than being a "diet", it's really just a new outlook altogether. THANK YOU, CINCH!

For most/all of my 31 years, I've led an active and healthy lifestyle and have LOVED food. I LOVE to eat, but I also love feeling fit and healthy - and LOOKing that way! Accordingly, of course I am always conscious of what I am eating or am NOT eating or should be eating. Furthermore, I am a busy New York City professional. I don't have alot of time (or kitchen space!) to track down and keep elaborate ingredients and fancy meals, and I'm often pulled into work / social meals out.

At times, all of this can be exhausting, stressful, and can perpetuate the sort-of "It's ok; maybe I ate too much of [XYZ unhealthy food]; I don't do it all the time AND I'll work it off!!" mentality. I'd feel anxious when at a dinner party, faced with platters of rich, indulgent foods and desserts, knowing I'd probably indulge a bit (or alot!) too much, relying on the next day's grueling gym session: "It's OK! I'll work it off!" I'd say!

Cinch provided the missing piece to my lifestyle: Absolute control. For the first time, I feel totally in control of what I eat, all the time. I never am afraid of a craving getting the better of me. I don't HAVE "bad" cravings anymore. Pizza office lunch? No problem! Free platter of brownies!? Who cares?! Celebratory dinner and drinks at hip downtown restaurant?! A breeze.

Without my even realizing what had happened, by the end of the detox, Cinch had completely reset my taste buds. The 5-day "detox" may seem strict, but nothing could be more worthwhile!

Now, I crave a Larabar or frozen raspberries with almond butter. Seriously. It feels like I'm feeding my body just what it needs. Cinch re-circuits you in a way that just feels natural and RIGHT.

As an aside, my husband - a fit, regular guys' guy - eats everything I buy and prepare and says at least several times per week (totally unprovoked by me!) how he LOVES the feeling of "eating really clean". (He's not fully versed in "Cinch"-ease.) He comments on how immediately he feels the effect of a few less "clean" meals and craves getting back to our Cinch-inspired home-cooking.

Finally, I've always been a relatively "fit" person who, as mentioned, would balance eating indulgences with extra exercise. Given the compliments I've received over the past several weeks, during which I have not significantly changed my exercise routines, I realize that the little push over the clff I needed was a diet clean-up. And that's what "Cinch" did for me. For all you gym rats who justify some "sloppy" eating with your workouts, you deserve the maximum benefits of your athletic efforts! Cinch will really allow you to see and feel results you've not imagined.

How did I find "Cinch"? My friend dropped three jeans sizes on the plan, and while she was starting out, she talked about feeling so SATISFIED by the food, about no longer feeling OBSESSED with food. About the Author

Damon Burton is a professor of sport psychology at the University of Idaho and has taught undergraduate and graduate applied sport psychology courses since 1983. At Idaho, Burton created master's and doctoral programs to develop sport psychology consultants with strong backgrounds in both counseling and performance enhancement. A fellow and former president of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), he is an AASP-certified consultant and past chair of the certification committee. A former athlete and coach who has worked extensively in coaching education for almost 30 years, educating over 4,500 coaches, Burton has consulted with coaches and athletes from youth sport to Olympic and professional levels on the development of mental skills in both individual and team settings. He coauthored Competitive Anxiety in Sport, authored or coauthored numerous research studies evaluating the effectiveness of mental skills training programs, and supervised or mentored many master's and doctoral students in their work helping coaches and athletes develop mental skills. Burton is past chair of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) Sport Psychology Academy and a longtime member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA). He earned a master's degree in sport psychology from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and a PhD in sport psychology from the University of Illinois, specializing in applied sport psychology and coaching education.

Thomas D. Raedeke is associate professor of sport and exercise psychology at East Carolina University. Since 1992, Raedeke has taught graduate and undergraduate applied sport psychology courses focusing on coaching education and mental skills training at the University of Oregon, University of Colorado, and East Carolina University, earning the University of North Carolina's Board of Governor Distinguished Professor for Teaching Award in 2007. A research expert on motivation, stress, and burnout, Raedeke has worked with athletes and coaches from a variety of sport types and skill levels. He is a certified consultant through the Association of Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), where he is chair of the Health and Exercise Psychology Committee. He is also a member of the North American Society for the Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity (NASPSPA) and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD). Raedeke is past chair of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Sport and Exercise Psychology Academy. A former collegiate wrestler, Dr. Raedeke earned his master's degree from the University of Idaho and a PhD from the University of Oregon, with a focus on sport and exercise psychology. He has also served as a research assistant in sport psychology at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and as an instructor for American Sport Education Program (ASEP) coaching courses.

Excellent Chapter on Developing Positive Self-Talk Scripts

I'm not a sports coach, so I won't review the rest of the book. However, I was searching for techniques in developing positive Self-Talk Scripts, and this books Chapter 7 Self-Talk is the very best I have seen anywhere on developing specific, directed, self-talk scripts. I ordered this book specifically for this chapter alone. Although emphasizing sport, the worksheets and purposes can be used in developing self-talk for any situation in one's life. Also, this book includes an excellent overview and summary of the current understanding and application of Self-Talk. Highly recommended for fans of Self-Talk, along with the seminal 'The Self-Talk Solution' by Dr. Shad Helmstetter.

Jinny Beyer Quilt Making By HAnd

I hand piece and hand quilt virtually everything---I'm a luddlite, I guess, and when I first began to quilt I quickly realized that I detest sewing machines----what's the point of production sewing, exactly? This is a lovely book, with lots of great advice and terrific photos. However, I think that for one-piece patterns (such as hexagons or diamonds) there can be a better way than templates---check out shapes of the template stamps sold by Stamps By Kate on her website. I have just finished quilting my 2nd queen-sized field of diamonds and am wrapping up the piecing of a seven sisters using the stamps---and, yes, I stitch even the sashing and borders by hand....so this book together with Kate's product simplify and complement.I adore the forgiveness quality of handwork, as well as the serenity and relaxation of the process. I think that Jinny's techniques are esay to follow and certainly she is an inspiration. This is a great gift, too; it's relaxing just to read it!

First Time Quilter

I recently decided to take up quilting as a hobby. I haven't touched a sewing machine since 7th grade, so I figured I'd give hand quilting a try. This book definitely gave me the confidence I needed to get started. The hand quilts Jinny has made are inspirational, and all the detailed instructions are perfect. I especially appreciate all the photographs that show stitches step-by-step.

I now realize that even if I was a pro with a sewing machine, quilting by hand would be the way to go for me. I am the mother of a toddler and I work full time, so doing piecework in "found moments" is very convenient. I can pin pieces together while my daughter eats a snack at the table, and I can sew while she sleeps. It is wonderful to spend evenings watching television and stitching at the same time, without it becoming a big production. It has taken me 3 months, but I am nearly finished with a twin size quilt (which I'll use on my daughter's first big-girl bed), and everyone is impressed that I've done it all by hand. I hope to make quilt-making a hobby I can enjoy with my daughter when she is older.

I only wish that this book included more instruction on actual quilt construction (attaching the backing, finish the edges, etc.) I've had to check books out from the library to get better instruction on these aspects, as this book mainly focuses on stitching pieces to make the blocks, and that is it.

Hate my sewing machine!

I love this book because I hate my sewing machine! I think I've sewn beautiful quilt blocks with my machine. I flip them over, and - AUUGG! - another block is caught all the way down the seam. Rip out city! I always thought there was a better way. Well, it's this book. Jinny Beyer is very conversational and shows up close, with photos of her hands, how to do all the "tough" stuff, like mitered corners, bias edges, piecing curves, by hand, as well as very good chapters for beginners. It's kind of like being at a quilting bee with Jinny!

Enjoyable read

With all the hustle and bustle of the season, sometimes we forget other people are having a tough time around the holidays. This book, which ended on a very sweet note, reminds us that sometimes things aren't always as they appear. I enjoyed the way the author set this book up. The story line was intriguing and not predictable, which is nice for a romance novel.

It was a very fast read for me and very enjoyable. I received a complimentary copy of this book for review.

It was a dreamy trip through New York with incredible description and a very heartfelt love story. Very realistic even though a lot was fictional. I love the writer and can't put his books down once I start reading them. Hope for many more!!!

Excellent Christmas Story

This was a very sweet story that I really enjoyed and the perfect time of the year to read it. The author did a good job at bringing the characters to life and helping you to relate to them.

In this story we meet Jennifer who after a tragedy of losing someone she loved has decided to live the life of a bitter individual. She is very much like Scrooge at the beginning of the story and circumstances, events and people are what leads to her change of heart.

In effort to try to get her to move past the events of her past a friend of hers tries to whisk her away on an adventure to the city to help her forget her troubles. On their adventure you watch as Jennifer starts to change for the better and even finds that yes maybe love is possible after loss if you don’t drown yourself in sorrow you can heal and move on with your life because after all that is what anyone who loves or loved you would want you to do.

An excellent Christmas read that is a perfect book for an afternoon in front of the fire. The author is very talented and I will be looking forward to more of her stories in the future.
