"How to Make Friends and Monsters" by Ron Bates was sent to me free of charge, by Zonderkids, in exchange for my honest review of it.
"How to Make Friends and Monsters" is a young adult fiction book about Howard Boward. He was what some would call the classic geek. He loved science and had no friends. His mother became concerned and bought him a book called, "How to Make Friends". Little Mr. Science decided that he would make a friend...The problem is, he was setting out to "MAKE" a friend. He wanted a friend who was big and would be his best friend, so he started asking, even the bullies who picked on him daily, for strands of their hair so he could get their DNA. Well, he eventually got ALL KINDS of hair from animals and from one sweet little girl. He puts a bunch of stuff together and actually "makes" a friend who he hooks to his computer when he wants to teach him something.

With all the shenanigans that Howard and his new friend get into, I was laughing hysterically through, probably 90%, of this book. It was extremely funny and fun to read.

I would definitely recommend this book for a fun read, not only for young kids, but for any age group that likes to laugh.

Fun and good book for kids

I thought the book itself was great, because it taught the reader that you cannot force people to be your friend and you cannot buy your friends.

It would be a good book for tweens to read. They will be able to learn how to and not too make friends. I know that tweens, especially those who are different have trouble fitting in and may go to any length to do so. Howard and his monster friend can show them the right way to gain true friends.

I highly recommend it.

Great read

I read this book with my 2nd grader and she could not put it down. I enjoyed the little lessons about fitting in, bullies, and friendship. I have to admit, I was a little teary eyed at the end. It's a really good book for young readers.

Very good insight into the LAPD, Riots and Rodney King

A very detailed and seeming honest accounting of the Rodney King beating, the Trials the Riots and the dysfunctional LAPD command. While I am a fan of the LAPD parts of this book were painful to read. While most officers in the field seemed to want to do the right thing they were left in the cold by Darryl Gates, a man I admired and a command structure at LAPD that could not think on it's own. This book offers a fair accounting of the beating of Rodney King, not the "motorist" the felon Rodney King running from the police. Nothing good comes from running from the police. The book is probably more interesting if your from that area and know something of the people involved. Very detailed, Very informative.

A tremendous job of reporting that challenges and provokes.

An outstanding piece of reporting that takes the long view of the effects of the Rodney King trial and subsequent events, "Official Negligence" makes some fresh points about a sequence of episodes most people are tired of talking about. Of the fascinating cast of characters profiled in this book, the only one who emerges as anything approaching a hero is perhaps the least likely candidate: Stacy Koon, the sergeant who oversaw the original arrest of King and was later convicted of violating King's civil rights. Cannon's argument, at root, is that it is highly debateable whether a crime was committed in Pasadena in March, 1991, when King was pulled over and eventually beaten, and that racial animosity played virtually no role in the event. What is NOT debateable, according to Cannon, is the "official negligence" of the L.A. city council, Mayor Tom Bradley, the L.A. court system, and the LAPD leadership that produced the poorly trained officers who originally confronted King and the subsequent chaos that engulfed Los Angeles. Cannon is a terrific reporter who refuses to engage in policy prescriptions, but he does an outstanding job of detailing the sequence of communication breakdowns, judicial fiat, local political arrogance and LAPD miscalculations that produced an environment where riots were a natural consequence. The only (minor) flaw is a sense of repetition that suggests another editorial pass at the manuscript would have been useful, but overall, "Official Negligence" is an absolutely compelling read that will, despite whatever preconceptions you have of Rodney King, the LAPD, or the causes of the 1992 riots, challenge your preconceptions and force a rethinking of basic assumptions surrounding law enforcement, urban America, and Los Angeles.

CNN Headline News + Film Every Five Minutes = Injustice

Echoing sentiments expressed by other reviewers, I wholly concur after reading "Official Negligence" that negligent, inflammatory US media reporting, abetted by the jump-to-conclusion negligence of the Los Angeles Police Department, significantly and overwhelmingly warped public perception of the Rodney King affair and propagated the worst riots in recent history.
Taken in the context of the entire story, as reported in "Official Negligence," the police officers were racially railroaded and politically double-jeopardized by a media/legal system that -- once it had seen the film excerpt -- truly never wanted to make any further effort to learn the facts of the case.
This is an important book to read, if for no other reason than to keep you alert from now forward when watching television news. They're going to show you what SELLS, and not necessarily what TELLS.

BEST STUDY TOOL I FOUND

I tried a few different books to prepare for my EA exam but this book was way easier to understand than the others. The test portions of this book really helped me study and understand the type of questions that would be asked on the exam. This book is in note format so it was easy for me to identify which areas I needed further studying on without lengthy and unnecessary information. Definitely recommend this book to ANYONE trying to obtain an EA license, it was the most effective study tool at my disposal!!! A++++++

so I really needed a study guide that gives me the information I need in a way that's easy to understand

I was thinking of becoming an EA and started off reading another study guide. I was having a hard time understanding the text and didn't feel I was absorbing what I needed to in order to take the test. I don't have any experience with taxes, laws, rules, etc. so I really needed a study guide that gives me the information I need in a way that's easy to understand. The Logix Enrolled Agent Exam Review Course by Michael Guenther is all that and more. There's so much to learn yet I don't feel overwhelmed by all the information. I'm not ready to take the test yet, but I'm confident, with this guide, I'll have what I need to pass the exam with no problem.

Saundra Rose Maley co-edited A Wild Perfection: The Selected Letters of James Wright (Farrar, Straus and Giroux) with Anne Wright; they are both at work on Where the Treasure Lies (Wesleyan University Press), a book about Wright and translation. She is the author of Solitary Apprenticeship: James Wright and German Poetry (Mellen Press. With Francis A. Burkle-Young, she co-authored both The Art of the Footnote: The Intelligent Student's Guide to the Art and Science of Annotating Texts and The Research Guide for the Digital Age: A New Handbook to Research and writing for the Serious Students (both from University Press of America). Getting It Right

“Good things take time,” says Gino the baker in “Gino’s Bakery,” 47 pages into Saundra Maley’s Disappearing Act. And indeed Maley has taken her time in publishing, mid-life, this first collection of poems. But what strikes me most is how slowly and deliberately each poem unfolds; I can practically feel my heartbeat calm, my breathing settle, as I make my way through them.

Echoing the Imagism of WCW’s poem XXII from Spring and All, which famously begins “so much depends,” Disappearing Act begins with a poem that also invokes Maley’s cover image: “this blue door / matters, it all / matters.” A credo, perhaps, as it sets the tone for how lovingly the poet handles each word, taking her time, through revision after revision, to get it right.

Yes, “Pazienza,” as Gino declares, pays off. Maley has let memory steep in time and deepen toward something more than nostalgia. I find myself savoring these poems, emotions softening like butter on fresh-baked bread as I read them. By the time I reach the book’s final section, Departures—whose poem “Inferno” contains the lines “And dark sweet coal / With patience / Bursts with light”—my slow read has been amply rewarded: something here has been kindled that, for lack of a better word, I can only call SPIRIT.
