Very interesting read!

What an excellent book! It shows the apartheid-era issues, and how regular people were fooled by the South African government, and the courage of one man to show the world of the atrocities and duplicity of the government.

I have to comment the author on his bravery, and decision to stand up for his beliefs, no matter the consequences. He became a man at a very young age, when most of the guys his age were more concerned with partying. What an inspiration!

If you are interested in the issues of apartheid, and the downfall of that era, you will definitely enjoy this book!

A surprsingly (?) good book!

When I received this book, at first glance, I was disappointed--the exercises seemed so...simple. But I gave it a try, and found that, a lot of those exercise were hard for me to play. So, with a little faith, I dived in deeper, and went through the whole book over the course of around a week. I have, so far, found it to be a very enlightening and practical guide, to help me find areas I am weak in, and to help me improve. It's not about "music"--it's just about technique. E.g., can you play a note on the g-string with your left middle-finger, plucking with your right index-finger, and then play a note on the d-string with your ring-finger and pluck with the left finger. Sounds easy, but, for me at least, it's not always the case.

I think this is a "two-hand" exercise book. The author doesn't go into hardly any detail about technique--he just lays out the exercises. I recommend doing all the exercises starting with the left then right plucking finger.

As a bass player for 35 years, my fingers have definitely become arthritic to some degree. The exercises help with that- especially if you play an extended range bass or upright where the stretches are particularly long.

This book is killer! The biggest hurdle to get over when first learning to play the bass or any stringed instrument is building the hand strength and muscle memory for the chord changes and scales. This book is the best way to build these muscles. It's a great book. Perfect for any player on any level. You really can feel and see immediate results. You won't be disappointed!

About the Author
Brian Ashcraft is a senior contributing editor for the video-game site Kotaku. Ashcraft was previously a contributing editor at Wired magazine; his work has also appeared in Popular Science, the Guardian, the Japan Times, and the design journal Metropolis, as well as numerous other publications worldwide. He is the author of Arcade Mania! and Japanese Schoolgirl Confidential. Originally from Texas, he has called Osaka home for well over a decade.

Hori Benny was born in Minneapolis and moved to Japan in 2002. Two years later he settled in Osaka and began a tattoo apprenticeship at Chopstick Tattoo. In 2014 he formed his own studio, Invasion Club, near Osaka's otaku cultural center in Nipponbashi. He does custom work in a variety of genres.

Trying to put all the details or history of tattooing in Japan into a book is basically impossible. Instead you are going to be able to get a glimpse at quite a few styles and aspects of the art as it exists in Japan. I think the stand out point for this book would be the interviews. Hori Benny is an Osaka staple in the tattooing community and without him none of these interviews would've been able to happen (let alone all in one spot!).

Brilliant. Glad to see something like this finally come out. It doesn't over-romanticize Japan, like many books do, but rather provides a comprehensive and stimulating exploration of Japanese tattoo culture, influencing factors and history. Awesome artwork as one would expect from something of this calibre.

The New Authority on the Japanese Tattoo--Past, Present & Future

​In his fourth book, Japanese Tattoos: History * Culture * Design, Brian Ashcraft teams up with Osaka artist Hori Benny to tackle a traditionally dense subject and make it accessible to everyone. While there are other books covering the subject, this is easily the most approachable.

The book is available in digital and paperback formats; for the purposes of this view, I relied mostly on my paperback copy. That said, one advantage of the digital version is that you can zoom in on the photos. However, this doesn't take away from the paperback version, which is printed in full colour on good quality paper.

Inside, the text is immediately engaging. The introduction is extensive, providing background on the history and culture of tattoos, and how the latter has changed. This makes a solid foundation for first chapter, which covers kanji tattoos and takes the reader much further back than they might expect! Did you know that before being used for punishment, tattoos could denote rank, or social status? That they were sometimes used to mark pledges, or to identify fallen warriors? Or maybe you're looking to get a kanji tattoo, yourself--advice on that can be found here, too.

The next three chapters cover other designs and motifs common to the artform. Every example is provided with an in-depth explanation of its significance and history, complete with pictorial examples. Often, idiosyncrasies of language that might be lost on a non-native speaker are brought to light. Instead of dry exposition that would leave some simply skimming through the photos, you have passionate writing that seeks to share information written in such a fashion that you can't help but feel the authors want you to develop the same enthusiasm they already have.

The fifth chapter, The Full Bodysuit, is best described in its own introductory text: "The bodysuit is the fullest expression of irezumi." Once again, any preconceptions the reader might have are challenged, here. The different types of bodysuit are explored (yes, there are several!), their layouts and borders. When the entire body is being used as a canvas, everything has meaning.

The sixth and final chapter covers how tattoos and even the methods of tattooing have changed over time. As patterns and styles were passed down from master to apprentice, new designs have flourished along classic motifs, while still adhering to the rules of irezumi. Geek tattoos (also known as otatoo, a word coined by co-author Hori Benny) began to appear in the past few decades, while still reflecting the values and interests of modern life.

While not a section unto itself, I also appreciated the tattooist and client profiles scattered throughout the book. More than any other, this is an industry and artform that requires people. I think that's what makes this book so special. All of the parts come together to show that this is a living, storied art made possible by the lives dedicated to it. Quick, but good read

Offiside is about Adam who is a MLS player and is also openly gay. The story starts off with him getting transferred from the LA Galaxy (the team that Beckham played for when he came to the States to play) to the St. Louis Gateway. His new housemate and fellow teammate, Colin, just might make Adam's unwanted transfer worthwhile. But Adam is making Colin think about his sexuality for the first time because his whole life has been about soccer and he's always put off examining his true feelings/identity. Being out is hard, but being an out athlete can have damaging and dangerous consequences.

I haven't been able to find too many sports themed m/m romances, so when one comes along I snatch it up. This one had good characters and a pretty decent plot, but the length takes away from the development of the story. The ending seemed somewhat rushed to me. It's a nice wrap-up of the story, but it just came too soon. I feel like the author could have fleshed it out a bit more.

FYI: this is not erotica, so don't be expecting a bunch of sex. In fact, there's hardly any at all. It's more about being an out person in the public eye.

Great story, good sports book

I enjoyed this book, even though I am not a soccer fan. Our hero falls in love with a (maybe) straight teammate, kicks himself, but ends up with his man. Not sure I buy that the team would support this couple, but maybe soccer is different is ways from our other American sports teams, but I think there would be more negative comments from other players on the team.

Who wouldn't love these two guys?

Well written, great research into the world of professional soccer, and good characterizations. Give it a read.

Love that the story centered around soccer

This was a very well written story. It was the typical man meets man, man falls into instant lust/love with man, has sex and a relationship with only some bumps in the road.

This was a full out man wasn't looking for relationship meets sweet, lovable boy/man and falls head over ass in love. They encounter serious issues not just bumps. Some it is settled too easily, but it wouldn't be fiction if it was entirely lifelike.

Adam and Colin are both soccer players on the same team. Adam was recently, reluctantly transferred to this team. He doesn't want to be there and plans to only finish the season. Things start to change after he meets Colin and slowly progresses over the remainder of the season. While the realistic aspects of a male soccer player being out and proud are slim, the author makes it work. Yes, the team and their teammates accept it too easily but again this is fiction. They encounter opposition from the outside and this is realistic. (I live in the city the story is set in...it would most likely be a little worse or a lot better depending on the area they lived in.) They face another more critical point toward the end of the story that made Adam realize he has finally settled and grow up due to this move.

Adam is a hot, sexy soccer player, Colin is a sweet, sees the best in everyone adorable soccer player...there is nothing NOT to love about this book. Well at least for me, soccer is one of my favorite fangirl sports and I live in the City the book is set in. I will definitely look for other and future books from Ryan Loveless.
