About the Author

Peter Buxmann is a Professor of Software Business & Information Management at Darmstadt University of Technology. His research fields include Software Business, Future Internet Economy, and Information Management. Moreover, he supports the foundation of IT companies and serves as a Department Editor of the Journal Wirtschaftsinformatik / Business & Information Systems Engineering.

Heiner Diefenbach is CEO of TDS AG, Neckarsulm (Germany), a stock market listed IT services company. He has more than 20 years experience in the IT Industry as a board member at major players such as Atos Origin and Computer Science Corporation. 

Thomas Hess
After his studies in Information Systems at Darmstadt University of Technology, Thomas Hess completed his doctorate at St. Gallen University (Switzerland) in 1995. Since 2001 Thomas has been a professor at LMU Munich, where he also serves as director of the Institute for Information Systems and New Media. His research focuses on the digitalization of media industries, on software vendors and on new value systems.

This book is one of the better books on GameSalad and the information is easy to understand. The great part is that it talks about the different games you should be creating. Perfect for teens as well as adults.

Explaining the Rules, Both Written and Understood

The income tax laws of the United States clearly allow you do deduct business expenses. But from this basic rule has come an incredibly complex set of subsidiary rules that further define what are legitimate deductions and what are not allowed.

The strength of this book is that it explains these rather complex (arcane even) IRS rules in plain common sense language that the average businessman can follow. And further it gives hints and tips that are based on what is known about how the IRS really operates - these are the real rules instead of the written rules. For instance -- Filing by mail reduces your chance of being audited. Why, because the IRS doesn't transcribe all of the information on the printed return to electronic form where it can be analyzed by computer. If you file electronically, everything you enter is available for the computer to analyze.

You'll never know if information like this kept you from being audited, but it's certainly information that you'd want to know. In this book there is a wealth of such information that can't help but be of use as you prepare your tax forms.

Excellent Tips

At first glance, I thought, "Okay. It's a textbook." Yet, as I read this book it became a walk through finding what I wanted - excellent tips on small business deductions.

Mr. Fishman has managed to convert tax law and accounting into an easy to follow source for anyone who has or plans to have a small business.

And there were many sections that surprized me.

One example was "The basic rule is that, no matter what month and day of the year you buy an asset, you treat it as being placed in service on July 1 -the midpoint of the year. This means that you get one-half year of depreciation for the first year that you own an asset."

Another great part in this book is that he identifies excellent details about the difference between deductions for the homebased small business deductions that are local travel (within your county), versus travel that is outside of your area.

About the Author
Richard Dobbs, James Manyika, and Jonathan Woetzel are the directors of the McKinsey Global Institute, the business and economics arm of the global management consulting firm McKinsey & Company.

Richard Dobbs, based in London, has led research on global economic trends, including urbanization, resource markets, capital markets, lifestyle diseases, productivity, and growth. He is a coauthor of Value: The Four Cornerstones of Corporate Finance and has taught at the Said Business School at Oxford University.

Dr. James Manyika, based in Silicon Valley since 1994, has led research on the global economy, disruptive technologies, the digital economy, and productivity. He is the author of a book on robotics as well as technical and business articles. He was appointed by President Obama as the vice chair of the President’s Global Development Council. He is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and is on advisory boards at Harvard, UC Berkeley, and Oxford, where he was a research fellow.

Dr. Jonathan Woetzel, based in China since 1985, has led research on urbanization, the global economy, sustainability, and productivity. He also leads McKinsey’s Cities Special Initiative and is cochair of the Urban China Initiative. He has authored four books on China, most recently The One Hour China Book, and is an adjunct professor at the China-European International Business School.

Disappointingly ordinary in its descriptions

McKinsey seeks to pull together all of the forces that seek to pull apart business strategies. The result is a surprisingly flat description that rehashes past McKinsey research reports than offer a new way to look at the world and the relevance of strategic choices and investments. The four trends are below:

Trend 1: The locus of economic activity is shifting to emerging markets like China, India, Asia and Africa
Trend 2: Technology's impact on the economy is accelerating
Trend 3: Demographics, the aging of the population is shifting demands
Trend 4: Connectedness as trade, capital, people and information flow across national boarders

Each trend is treated in a formulaic way, following a standard structure with slavish adherence. You can extract the books outline which should give you and idea of the limitations of the book's story telling or information value.

Overall, this book is filled with factoids and other little nuggets, many previously published by McKinsey's Global Institute. So if you are looking for new insight, you will not find it here. The discussions of each trend are interesting in their own ways, but the prose is rather bland and expository rather than telling an engaging story that drives understanding or action.

The book's prescriptions are surprisingly simple -- mostly around do better -- rather thank do things differently.

Overall not recommended if you are looking for new ideas. It may be helpful for others to re-enforce their strategic decisions, particularly if those decisions are not too radical.

There are plenty of interesting examples and the overall analysis is interesting, but the pace is too slow and often unengaging. Striving to make the point sink well, too much repetition is used.

The Mad Atlas of Virginia King

The Mad Atlas of Virginia King, a non-fiction novel by Jacksonville, Florida author Tim Gilmore, is as unique and mesmerizing as the protagonist Virginia King herself.

Gilmore sets the book’s tone by opening with Walt Whitman’s 1855 preface to the original Leaves of Grass. Next, a few lyrics from “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors: Ashen lady...Give up your vows...Save our city...Right now. And then, the Reverend Tom Are’s eulogy: “It seems to me that Virginia King served as something of a prophet in our town.”

Turn the page and the unexpected foreword by Hurley Winkler includes quirky illustrations of Miss Virginia King wearing her pillbox hat, a scowling face, and her determined hunched-back walk around the town.

Tim Gilmore spent countless hours at the Jacksonville Historical Society researching Virginia’s handwritten, “often inaccurate notes” about Jacksonville. These notes were found in binders covering 8,558 pages tucked away in dusty shelves. Virginia’s book titled, Interesting Facts about Leading People and Families of Duval County: Also, Where Progress Has Changed a Lot of Homes and Buildings, was originally published in 1968. However she continued to publish longer and longer editions up to 1977.

Gilmore examined numerous, blurry and fading photos of buildings and residences taken by Virginia with her Brownie camera throughout the years. Many of these photos along with her handwritten, very specific notations on each picture, are found throughout The Mad Atlas of Virginia King.

There are several hand-drawn maps and drawings of residences by Kiley Secrest illustrating where Virginia King lived from 1915 to 2001.

When I started reading The Mad Atlas of Virginia King, it felt like a daunting task trying to follow the author’s factual documentation of Virginia’s different addresses and residential dates. Being new to Jacksonville, it was difficult to visualize the multiple locations listed. But soon Gilmore’s descriptions began to take form. Virginia was a little girl. She had seizures. She was and “odd child, and an old child too.”

And suddenly, it’s the 1920’s and the little girl Virginia vanishes from the pages. Gilmore’s stream of consciousness rudely interrupts. He’s buying wine at a local package store. But the interruption doesn’t last and Gilmore returns back in time. It is now the 1960’s and I get a glimpse of Virginia’s apartment. It’s 1974 and Virginia moves again. However, the author’s jarring presence is back. It’s 1992. Gilmore is at a party at the very apartment Virginia once lived. Rats are fed to pythons. And then it’s 2015 again. There’s an old man with a filthy beard spewing profanities from a porch.

Before I even realize it, I was hooked. I didn’t see it coming: Virginia, Jacksonville, Gilmore were all connected. They were one. There was a pattern. Although a very convoluted pattern, I enjoyed the ride. Page after page, photo after photo, Gilmore brought to life the eccentric Riverside character children laughed at, adults shunned, and very few people loved. Gilmore masterfully followed her obsessive footsteps as she wandered the city on foot year after year. Walking. Documenting. Photographing. And desperately longing to keep her past intact.

If not for Tim Gilmore’s dedication, Virginia King’s legacy, like the beautiful, decrepit buildings she could not save, would be lost forever. But with each sentence, Gilmore rebuilt, reconstructed, and resurrected the unloved and unlovable Virginia King. By touching “the same page Virginia touched...these two people so unlikely to have met” became one. Although, “she’s gone...and only the city remains”, Virginia King—“a prophet that saved the city”—lives eternally.

This 2011 Lyons Press release is the paperback edition of the original published in 2009 by Osprey Publishing. It relates 101 MYTHS, MISHAPS AND MISADVENTURES OF MILITARY HISTORY. As much as I love military trivia books, LOOSE CANNONS has some built-in flaws that dropped its rating to three stars.

There is some interesting history in LOOSE CANNONS. If you're into military history, some of the stories will ring a bell, having been featured in other similarly-themed books. Donald divides his 101 tales into four sections: The Good, The Bad and The Deadly; Quote Misquote; The Just Ain't; and Sad Wars & Mad Weapons. Donald regrettably hasn't lost his penchant for awful puns, witness some of his chapter headings: Fram Bad to Wirz; Kentucky 'Fraid Chicken; Springtime for Hitler in Liverpool; De Sade Whips Up a Storm; etc. I wish he'd give it a rest but it's his book.

Readers - supposedly - get the straight skinny on individuals (Che Guevera, Horatio Nelson, Hitler, Lawrence of Arabia, Eddie Chapman, Jim Bowie, Lord Haw-Haw, etc.), quotes/misquotes (i.e. Send Us More Japs!), military history legends/lies (the Angel of Mons, Bunker Hill, San Juan Hill, Rasputin's death, etc.) and the weirder side of war (bat bombs, the Habakkuk ice carriers, South American soccer wars, etc).

Donald is an entertaining storyteller but I wish he would document where he's getting all his material. Likewise, he apparently never met a military figure he liked. They're all scalawags, cheats, psychos, etc. His relentlessly negative approach gets to be a bit much.

So, a mixed verdict on LOOSE CANNONS. It's interesting history but could have been better presented. Your call, folks.

About the Author
Tristram D. Wyatt is a senior researcher at Oxford University's Department of Zoology and an Emeritus Fellow of Kellogg College, Oxford.
