Calling his book a "field guide to ecology," Kricher introduces basic ecological concepts and describes notable field marks that define a particular environment. Twenty-seven types of forest communities east of the Rockies are described in terms of their characteristic indicator species. Illustrative plates, many of which are in color, accompany these descriptions. Seasonal processes within the forest are also discussed. This book, when used in conjunction with appropriate field guides, is an excellent introduction for the amateur naturalist who wants to see the forest as a whole. Recommended. Introducing the Eastern Forest

The purpose of this guide is not to assist one in identifying species of flora and fauna found in the Eastern Forest--such a tome would be monumental in size--but rather to instill in the reader an understanding of the forest's general dynamics. The book is divided into eight sections; they are:
1) How to use this book
2) Forest field marks
3) Eastern forest communities
4) Disturbance and pioneer plants
5) Adaptation
6) Paterns of spring
7) Nature in summer
8) Autumn and winter
This book is an excellent beginning point for those who want to develope a better understanding of forest ecology. I highly recommend it.

How things really work

Though this guide and its companion Western forest edition have been in print for over a decade, I only stumbled on it last year. It concisely provides the missing links between other field guides to plants, fungi, insects, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals, tracks, fossils ... you get the drift. As a hiker, bird-watcher or -feeder, observer, photographer or amateur naturalist, the first step is usually simple identification of species. (With summer warblers, of course, the first step is actually seeing the bird in question.) In the same way that traditional field guides provide portable I.D. info, the ECOLOGY version helps you understand the change you see as you hike down out of a Beech-Maple forest into an Oak-Hickory stand, or the subtle differences when a Northern Riverine Forest segues into a Northern Swamp. By no means comprehensive (remember this fits in your pocket), this book, like the science of ecology itself, is composed of seemingly endless delightful digressions. Where do galls come from? How do dragonflies mate? Have you ever bothered to learn frog calls? What can the vegetation in an old field tell you about history? This volume (and by my inference the Western companion) are an excellent and fascinating addition to any field guide collection.

Very good collection of stories

Very good collection of stories. Much better than other pregnant content I've read. This one literally has 100+ pages in it so at least it's worth the price. And all of them were hot, with a few being just insanely hilarious too. I love this writer, just wish he'd do more stuff. I've never read erotic preg fiction that was this good. LOVE IT! Will be assigned to my entire 7th grade class next year.

This might be the greatest fantasy adventure novel I have read in the last decade. I don't generally write reviews for books I read because I believe it best not to assert my own interpretation before the reader gets a chance to establish theirs, but because the author seems relatively unknown I hope it might do some good.

As a seventh grade English teacher, I am constantly on the hunt for new authors that might be able to draw a young person's attention for longer than a couple of minutes. When I caught one of my students (who generally hates any kind of reading) with an ipad in class last week, I was surprised and pleased to see that he was actually reading! To those who do not deal with middle school age children on a regular basis, I cannot explain the magnitude of such a miracle. Naturally, I jotted down the name of the title.

I wont cheapen the story by getting too deep into the plot, but Jourdan floats through your imagination with a Tolken-esque ease. I do not drop the mans name lightly. The reader does not have his or her hand held through the depths of the world created on the pages, but instead is given just enough description to create their own captivating creatures. The characters are complex and very real, and peeling down the layers of each individual is one of the most enjoyable parts of the experience. The imagery is completely original and easily interpreted, painting clear pictures of the surrounding scenery without weighing down the story with needless details. If you love to read, you will most likely finish this book in one setting. If you do not love to read, you just might be able to change your mind for a few hours while you fight for your life in Terroria.

Awesome story, awesome characters. Never quite know who to root for, amazing plot. Couldn't really put it down until I was finished! Kudos to the author!

I loved this book! Such an exciting story, kept me on my toes the entire time. If you liked Harry Potter then you will really enjoy this book. I really hope this turns into a series.

Book has great potential

This is a textbook that is intended for undergraduates in the apparel and textile field. This book has the potential of becoming the leader in its category if the author would consider doing the following:

1. Remove the word sustainability from the title, bc as it stands now, there is nothing beyond lip service to this concept. Consider removing Wall-mart or Disney as examples of sustainability guidelines (really?) Or seriously consider concluding every chapter with a sustainable alternative?
2. Focus on the unique advantage of this author, which is her expertise in the field of sourcing and expand on the problems in the book beyond hypothetical.
3. Remove the intro chapters on economic theory (trade, porter, increasing returns, etc) because they are very weak and it is evident that this is not the strength of the author. Exchange econ chapters with real NPD chapters instead with spec sheets etc.
4. Add specific cases or examples from her experience in the field and remove duplicate econ chapters such as chapter six the external environment evaluation. Consider focusing on Asia only or Africa only instead of tap dancing to different examples and confusing the students.
5. Increase the display quality of the book by adding tables that truly mimic the real world so as not to diminish the quality of this book instead of using unrealistic tables.

Other books that claim to be about sourcing such as the book by Kunz are about everything but sourcing. So in a way, I really liked the idea of a book written from the perspective of an expert such as Brookshire Ha and was eager to use it my class. I will continue using it, but I hope she or the publisher would consider this feedback.
