I was a bit skeptical when I saw this listed here, as I've been told countless times by my professors that my ESSC110 lab manual was only available at the Student Center bookstore. However, as someone who despises buying books from campus-sponsored stores, I humored myself and looked around online. I saw this listed (albeit with a different ISBN than in my syllabus), but I figured I'd give it a shot and order it. It's the real thing.

incomprehensible.

I found the sentence structure to be so convoluted as to be almost incomprehensible. Some sentences didn't make any sense at all. The extensive use of passive tense didn't help. It was far too generalized and abstract in its description of early diplomatic history.
The picture on the front is priceless: "The reception of the Diplomatique (Macartney) and his suite, at the Court of Pekin". Published in September 1792, by famous caricaturist James Gillray.
I strongly recommend "The Practice of Diplomacy, Its Evolution, theory and administration" by Kieth Hamilton and Rochasrd Langhorne. It's far easier reading, far more thorough in its coverage of the subject, has more information and is better organized.

One damn embassy after another

Diplomatic practice - "the conduct of business between states by peaceful means", in Sir Ernest Satow's guide, published in 1917 - clearly refers to the means through which substance of the relations between states - diplomacy - is carried out. Diplomatic practice is a narrow field with a short sell-by date. After all, who cares about the how, after so many centuries? What one is interested in, is the "what it was all about", and how the practitioners, the diplomats, succeeded, or failed, in achieving the country's policy aims.

The title of the book is thus confusing, for it implies substance, when its subject, as stated on page 12, is the "privileged aspect of general systems of information-gathering, of representation, and of negotiation" - whatever this may mean. If in doubt, throw in the term "system" - it sounds scholarly.

Having thus stated his aim, the author sets out to refute: "Whiggish ideas of improvability and improvement" in "bureaucratic processes, notably systematization" (pg. 43). He does so by deploying a "standard chronological pattern" - and to do so he divides up the book into seven chapters. The early ones each cover 150-200 years of diplomatic practice, the last just 70 years. There is a "Conclusion: the future" section, which is just tidbits of contemporary practice thrown in for good measure.

Chronology is a lazy man's way to write history, and it leaves to the reader the task of organizing the facts as they dribble out of the time-line - drip, drop, drip. When moreover, the author jumps haphazardly from one country to the other, confusion is soon followed by boredom, and then despondency.

Eminently forgettable.

It's worth every cent and more.

I didn't have a clue as to how much I didn't know that I needed to know about buying land or buying a house. Right from the start about selecting a realtor. I didn't even know that most realtors represent the seller, even if they're not listing the property themselves. But there are "buyers agents" nationwide that are very knowledgeable who will represent just you. And that's just the beginning. Anyone who is thinking of buying just land or a house will not only benefit from what they learn from this book but most likely will save a lot of money, no matter how much you think you know.

This book is packed solid with very important information that is put together in a way that is understandable and easy to read. Without having the information in this book, There's a very good chance that you will make one or many costly mistakes you could have avoided by just knowing what to look for and where to go for answers. There's a reason "Backwoods Home Magazine" calls it "the Bible on finding and buying your place in the country." Without it, as the saying goes," you're up a creek without a paddle."

Great book - maybe even a little overdone.

This is a great book. Lots of good information here. I think the author at times went a little overboard in his explanations, but I understand he wants to be thorough. Could probably cut the book down by 1/4 and still be good, but I won't ding him for going overboard. This book has lots of great resources and good stories. Brilliant! 5 Stars.

Interesting stories

As the title says this book is a collection of stories about people who lived and were influential during the early European settlement of British East Africa. Some of the stories are from interviews with people who were there at the time and knew the persons concerned. I enjoyed it. Stories are a good length to read before going to sleep.

Mind-blowing

I have never read a book quite like this before. It is completely devoid of political correctness so often associated with revisionist history. The narrative is sharp and cuts like a knife. This book was copyright in 1954 which affords it two advantages: 1) it pre-dates political correctness and 2) The stories are told as first hand accounts told by the old timers when they were still alive. I can't begin to tell you how exciting it is to read African history when it's told by those who were actually there when the history was the present and not the past. Whew! What a ride!

Unexpected pleasures

This book goes well beyond Mr. Hunter's usual white hunter/safari fair. It is about a collection of characters, Arab, African, European and others who were around at the turn of the 20th century and on into the late '40's. It would probably NOT be considered politically correct, but Mr. Hunter and his co-author Daniel Mannix try their best to be unbiased in telling their tales. It begins with the story of Arab slaver Tippu Tib who had many adventures, including helping Stanley find Livingstone! A nice sketch of John Boyes (who was for a time, the king of the Kikuyu) is included for those who haven't read his own book. It finishes with Dr. L. S. B. Leakey who was as much Kikuyu as white man. I was unaware of his role in the Mau Mau troubles. In all, there are 15 tales of individuals and families who were part of the opening of Africa. As the authors say in the end: "Some were cruel, some prideful; probably a number of these pioneers were unwise, as all humans are. Many were heroes in the best sense of the word. But they all shared in a quality of courage which is the essential ingredient-at any frontier, on any continent, and at any time."
Finally, there is a nice bibliography at the end. I hope to read many of those tomes listed, if I can find them!

Love Mallory Monroe and David Lawson

First Class Scoundrel is set in the Caribbean, so it already had my interest. Love Mallory Monroe and David Lawson, she was left at the alter on her wedding day, he was cheated on by his ex-wife. Not everything is as it appears to be. This is a great short second chance at love story. I was looking for more. As always Liv Morris, delivers another great read.

I think Liv Morris writes with such sophistication. Add in a touch naughtiness and flirty fun and you get a sweet, passionate and entertaining standalone romance in this novella! Mallory Monroe has been jilted by her fiancé, and to get her mind off things, she takes relaxing trip to St. Croix. What begins on a plane with David Lawson in a jolt of lust leads to a mistaken situation, a little unintended naughtiness and a passionate night neither forget. This was a very satisfying, quick read that is a lovely, complete story. Liv does a great job wrapping up the novella in a unique way that I highly enjoyed. I was having so much fun that I could have continued to read more on Mallory and David. Also, the location is perfect for the summer. I wanted to lounge on the beach with my margarita watching this love story unfold. Liv never disappoints in her writing. I highly recommend all of her work!
